About This Workshop
In this workshop, youth explore the fundamentals of 3D model printing by learning how digital models are prepared, adjusted, and turned into physical objects. Participants use beginner-friendly tools such as TinkerCAD or Shapr3D to create or modify simple charms, tokens, or small props, focusing on scale, shape, and printability rather than complex modeling.
Youth are introduced to slicing and 3D printing workflows using Creality K1 Max and Ender 3 printers. While not every print will finish during the session, all participants will see their designs move from digital files to physical prints, reinforcing how digital decisions affect real-world outcomes.
What You’ll Learn & Do
Participants will:
- Create, adjust, or remix simple 3D models using beginner-friendly tools
- Learn how scale, shape, and alignment affect print success
- Explore slicing basics and how 3D printers read digital files
- Observe 3D printers in operation and understand the full print workflow
Why this matters:
3D model printing helps youth understand how digital designs become physical objects, a core concept in engineering, manufacturing, and product design. These skills support later STEAM Futures workshops involving laser cutting, motion builds, electronics integration, and media documentation of fabrication processes.
STEAM Futures Media Moment
Youth will take part in the Mini Media Crew during the 3D Reveal moment by recording short clips of their models on screen and their prints in progress. With permission, this footage may be included in the final STEAM Futures Community Showcase.
Who Can Attend
- Primary audience: Youth ages 8–18
- Youth ages 8–12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who remains on-site for the duration of the workshop.
- Adults may participate as full creators if space is available. Youth participants are always prioritized.
Cost
Youth participants attend free of charge thanks to support from the Liberty Bank Foundation and Eversource.
Adults are welcome to attend at no cost and are invited to contribute, if they are able, to help make future programs accessible to the whole community.

About the STEAM Futures Workshop Series
STEAM Futures is a hands-on workshop series hosted at Project Imo’s Idea Forge Creators Space. Each session blends art, design, science, technology, and engineering through accessible, project-based learning. Youth explore tools and techniques across multiple disciplines while building confidence as creative makers and problem-solvers. Participants may attend individual workshops or engage throughout the full series.
