STEAM Futures: Hands-On Youth Workshops at Project Imo’s Idea Forge Creators Space

STEAM Futures is a hands-on workshop series launched by Project Imo to expand access to creative and technical learning for youth ages 8–18.

Hosted at the Idea Forge Creators Space which is our maker space. The series blends art, design, engineering, technology, and media through immersive, project-based experiences that help young people build confidence as makers and problem-solvers.

The program emphasizes learning by doing. Connecting traditional creative skills with modern maker technologies in a supportive, mentor-rich environment.

About the STEAM Futures Workshop Series

The STEAM Futures Workshop Series includes eight half-day, in-person workshops paired with open maker space hours and a culminating community showcase.

Each workshop introduces accessible tools and techniques: such as sewing, digital design, simple machines, electronics, 3D printing, laser engraving, and media creation. All the while encouraging experimentation, iteration, and creative expression.

Youth may attend individual workshops or participate across multiple sessions, building skills over time while exploring a range of STEAM pathways.

Program Structure & Schedule

The STEAM Futures series is designed to balance structured learning with flexible creative time:

  • 8 half-day STEAM Futures workshops (January–February 2026)
  • 8 half-day open maker space sessions for continued project work and practice
  • 1 STEAM Futures Community Showcase (March 2026)
  • Workshops are hosted at Project Imo’s Idea Forge Creators Space in Willimantic, CT

Youth participants attend free of charge, removing common barriers to participation in STEAM learning opportunities.

Tools, Technologies, and Creative Pathways

Throughout the STEAM Futures Workshop Series, participants engage with a wide range of creative tools and maker technologies, including:

  • Sewing machines and textile tools
  • Craft cutters and digital illustration software
  • Simple circuits, LEDs, and motion components
  • 3D printers and introductory modeling tools
  • Laser engraving and cutting equipment
  • Cameras, audio tools, and basic media production setups

These tools are introduced gradually, helping youth connect creative ideas to real-world processes used in design, engineering, and media fields.

The STEAM Futures Workshop Series is made possible through support from the Liberty Bank Foundation, which ensures youth can participate at no cost, and Eversource, whose support helped equip and enhance the Idea Forge Creators Space.

Project Imo’s Base Camp and Idea Forge Creators Space will be temporarily closed while we move to a larger facility in downtown Willimantic, CT. We will reopen September 1st with our new fall calendar of Idea Forge and Teen Center Hours as well as a HUGE new fall program calendar of community events.


We are thrilled to be moving to 54 North St, Willimantic, CT, 06226 and sharing an exciting new space with our partners at NAFI CT.


During our move, our Idea Forge Creators Space and general open programming will be closed to relocate. Idea Forge members will have limited access to certain workstations. If you have a specific project you’re working on, let us know and we’ll arrange to make the move as minimally disruptive as possible. Your membership will be extended for 2 weeks to accommodate the interruption.


Special programs such as the Windham Prevention Coalition Youth Leadership Council Summit on Monday, August 25th will continue as planned at our Base Camp facility and the space at our amazing partners, The River Room.

Fourteen-year-old Henry has reached a major milestone by completing his Bronze Level Award in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Program—the first participant to do so through Connecticut’s sole Award Center. Throughout his journey, Henry set and met SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals across each required section. For his Physical Recreation section, which he designated as his major focus, Henry dedicated 26 weeks to rock climbing, developing strength, technique, and perseverance in the sport. In his 13-week Voluntary Service section, he collaborated with Project Imo, where he evaluated virtual reality applications for youth career development and created a TinkerCAD tutorial that remains an active resource at Project Imo’s Idea Forge Creators Space. Meanwhile, for his Skill section, Henry expanded his expertise in 3D design, sharpening his abilities in Blender under the guidance of Project Imo’s own Mark Flynn.

Henry’s Adventurous Journey (AJ) took him deep into the rugged backcountry of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, where he completed a challenging expedition with a Registered Activity Provider. As part of his AJ SMART goal, he conducted field observations of birds and their ecosystems, furthering his understanding of avian habitats and environmental interactions. This experience tested his endurance and adaptability, reinforcing the core values of resilience and problem-solving that are central to the Award program.

Henry’s completion of the Bronze Level Award is a testament to his diligence, professionalism, and passion for personal growth. His contributions to Project Imo’s youth development initiatives, particularly his VR application assessments and instructional work, showcase his commitment to making a meaningful impact on his community. With this achievement behind him, Henry has set a strong foundation for future endeavors—whether in STEM, outdoor exploration, or service leadership. His journey through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program highlights the importance of dedication and self-driven learning, inspiring other young people to take on similar challenges.

What Are Maker Space Programs?

Base Camp Summer Hours and Programs new bike fleet ride on the trailsWe’re excited to announce our summer 2024 Base Camp Teen Center Hours and special adventure programs!

Our general Teen Center Hours for Summer 2024 are Wednesdays from 12pm to 4pm. Tuesday, June 18th will be the last evening of our spring ’24 schedule. Check the calendar on our Base Camp Teen Center page for a calendar of events and open hours. 

We’ll host special Thursday adventure programs such as cycling with our NEW FLEET OF MOUNTAIN BIKES, birdwatching, hiking, field games, and more!

Wednesday Teen Center hours are open on select dates with your free Base Camp Youth Membership.

Why Imo: COmmunity and Connections

The essence of Imo lies in it’s drive to serve the community and facilitate connections. A quote that encapsulates Why Imo is, “Project Imo… I think I’ve always envisioned this as a chance to serve the community…building a charitable organization that helps people connect to the things they need and want to create their journey.” This highlights our foundational goals of aiding individuals in crafting their life paths through community support and resources. Inclusivity and Access

The importance of providing access to those who might not have it is a critical aspect of Imo’s mission. It was mentioned by Operations Director Mark Flynn when asked about why Imo, “Being able to give people that access point was a huge factor of my why of why I started and why I continue to do as much as I can for Project Imo.” It is clear that there is a dedication to inclusivity and ensuring opportunities for growth and learning for the community and the youth.

Adventure and Learning

The concept of adventure being both a literal and metaphorical journey for personal growth is a reoccurring theme. The notion from our Education Director David Howes, “Adventure is the word that stands out…that journey can be right in your own backyard…discovering that there are adventures right here in their own community” Which is a perfect illustration of the broad spectrum of experiences that Imo seeks to provide, emphasizing learning through exploration and discovery.

Youth Empowerment

Central to Imo’s philosophy is the belief in youth-led change and learning. Reflecting on the organization’s name and mission, “it still comes back to youth-led change and youth-led culture shift…youth have a lot to offer as teachers.” Capturing that essence of our commitment to valuing and fostering the potential within young individuals to contribute significantly to society and themselves.

Personal Growth and Leadership

The discussion on personal development and leadership resonates deeply with Imo’s objectives. A poignant observation was, “first you lead yourself and then…along the way…you do need some allies and some mentors.” A strong emphasis on our role in not only nurturing individual growth and self-reliance but also in creating a supportive network that facilitates this development.

The Power of Community Support

The importance of collective effort and community support will always be a core theme. Highlighting this, “every single person in a community has something to bring…we are successful based upon each other.” This completely underscores Imo’s belief in the strength of community collaboration and the impactful changes that can happen from community engagement and contribution.

Origin of the Name

In 1948, three Japanese scientists embarked on a long-term study of wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) on Koshima Island. Their strategy involved leaving food, including sweet potatoes, on sandy beaches to observe the monkeys’ behavior. Among these macaques was an 18-month-old named Imo, who unwittingly sparked a remarkable change.

In September 1953, Imo did something extraordinary. Instead of wiping the sand off her sweet potato with her hand, she washed it in a river. Her innovative approach to problem-solving caught the attention of the scientists.

Imo’s intelligence was not confined to her. She taught her siblings and even her parents to wash their food. This behavior transfer from offspring to parents was an unusual occurrence in nature. Imo’s creativity didn’t stop there – she began dipping her washed potatoes into the ocean before eating them, revealing a preference for the taste of salty potatoes.

The impact of Imo’s actions went beyond her immediate family. Gradually, the entire troop adopted the potato-washing behavior. By 1962, an overwhelming majority of monkeys over two years old on Koshima Island were washing their food.

Imo had fundamentally transformed their community.

What does this look like in action

At Base Camp we now have regularly scheduled programming and weekly nights in which the Teen Center is open to the community youth. It is in this location participants have access to the “Sparkspace” or “Spark Space” unsure if we are using it as one or two words just yet. A makerspace offering access to a wide array of tools and resources for exploring fields such as media, manufacturing, arts, and agriculture, among others. This space opens doors to learning experiences and opportunities otherwise unavailable. To help spark innovation and ideas.
