Event Description

Adventure Cycling the Airline

Take a midweek break and enjoy an afternoon ride along the Airline State Park Trail. Starting from Base Camp, we will head west on a scenic stretch of the trail that combines history, nature, and plenty of open space for relaxed cycling. This adventure is designed for riders who want to stretch their legs, connect with others, and discover the beauty of our local trail system at an easygoing pace.

What this ride is about

Unlike a long-distance ride or a competitive event, this outing is meant to be casual and fun. It is a chance to enjoy the trail, breathe fresh air, and see what makes the Airline such a unique part of our community. Whether you ride often or only occasionally, this ride is about being outdoors, not racing. We will go at a steady, comfortable speed that allows for conversation and observation along the way.

The route

The Airline State Park Trail west of Base Camp offers a mix of wooded corridors, quiet stretches, and wide-open views. The trail surface is mostly level and packed, making it suitable for a variety of bikes. We will ride for about two hours before looping back, giving us enough time to enjoy the surroundings without feeling rushed. Expect a balance of steady pedaling and short stops to gather and talk about what we are seeing.

Trail highlights

Along this section of the Airline, you may notice the remnants of its history as a rail line, from long, straight stretches to gentle grades that once carried trains through the region. Today, the trail has become a greenway that links towns and preserves. It is common to see songbirds darting through the trees, chipmunks crossing the path, and occasional glimpses of hawks overhead. The wide trail makes for an enjoyable ride in almost any season.

What to bring

  • A bike that is tuned and ready for a two-hour ride.
  • A properly fitted helmet. Helmets are required for all riders.
  • Water and a light snack to enjoy during a break.
  • Layers of clothing suitable for late afternoon temperatures.
  • Optional: a small daypack for comfort items such as sunscreen or a rain jacket.

A limited number of bikes may be available for those who need one. Please contact us ahead of time if you would like to borrow one so we can confirm availability.

Riding together

We will stay as a group and keep the pace friendly for everyone. The emphasis is on shared experience, not speed. At key points we will stop to take in the surroundings, regroup, and share any observations about the trail or wildlife. Riders should be comfortable handling a bike on a mixed-use trail and prepared to ride single file when other trail users are present.

Who should join

This ride is a good fit for adults and older teens with moderate cycling ability. You do not need to be an athlete or seasoned cyclist, but you should feel comfortable riding on a packed surface for up to two hours. If you enjoy being outdoors and like the idea of combining exercise with exploration, this is the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

What you will take away

  • A chance to unwind midweek with a refreshing ride in a beautiful setting.
  • New appreciation for the Airline trail and its role in connecting communities.
  • Memories of a shared experience with fellow riders.
  • Renewed energy and the satisfaction of choosing adventure close to home.

Adventure Cycling the Airline is about more than biking. It is about slowing down, being present, and enjoying what is right here in our backyard. Join us for a ride that mixes light exercise with a deeper connection to place, and discover how even a short midweek adventure can leave you feeling refreshed.
