SUMMARY:Light Up Characters Circuits and Creativity - STEAM Futures Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:About This Workshop\nIn this workshop\, participants learn the basics of circuits by creating light-up characters\, badges\, or small props. Using LEDs\, coin cell batteries\, and copper tape\, youth build simple paper- or card-based circuits that bring designs to life—lighting up eyes\, symbols\, or “magic tiles” that glow when a character stands on them. \nThe session focuses on accessible electronics concepts such as loops\, polarity\, and troubleshooting. Youth are encouraged to experiment\, test ideas\, and problem-solve when circuits don’t work on the first try. The techniques introduced here can be expanded in later STEAM Futures workshops involving motion\, 3D printing\, and interactive builds. \n\nWhat You’ll Learn & Do\nParticipants will: \n\nBuild simple circuits using batteries\, LEDs\, and conductive paths\nUse copper tape to create paper-based and card-based circuits\nExplore polarity\, loops\, and basic troubleshooting\nIntegrate light and electronics into visual character design\n\nWhy this matters:Learning basic circuitry helps youth understand how energy flows through systems and how design choices affect function. These concepts support future STEAM Futures workshops that involve interactive objects\, motion\, digital fabrication\, and media-driven storytelling. \n\nSTEAM Futures Media Moment\nYouth will take part in the Mini Media Crew by capturing short video clips of their illuminated creations in a Glow Booth setup. With permission\, these clips may be included in the final STEAM Futures Community Showcase. \n\nWho Can Attend\n\nPrimary audience: Youth ages 8–18\nYouth ages 8–12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who remains on-site for the duration of the workshop.\nAdults may participate as full creators if space is available. Youth participants are always prioritized.\n\n\nCost\nYouth participants attend free of charge thanks to support from the Liberty Bank Foundation and Eversource.Adults are welcome to attend at no cost and are invited to contribute\, if they are able\, to help make future programs accessible to the whole community. \n\nLocation\nProject Imo – Idea Forge Creators Space \n\nAbout the STEAM Futures Workshop Series\nSTEAM Futures is a hands-on workshop series hosted at Project Imo’s Idea Forge Creators Space. Each session blends art\, design\, science\, technology\, and engineering through accessible\, project-based learning. Youth explore tools and techniques across multiple disciplines while building confidence as creative makers and problem-solvers. Participants may attend individual workshops or engage throughout the full series. \n\nMade Possible By\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNEXT Workshop in the Series – From Sketch to Stickers \nOpen Maker Space Hours – Thursday January 29th from 2:30pm to 6:30pm

SUMMARY:From Sketch to Stickers - STEAM Futures Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:About This Workshop\nIn this workshop\, youth begin with a drawing\, symbol\, or character and transform it into a finished sticker or decal. Participants use iPads and computers with design tools such as Procreate\, Canva\, GIMP\, or Inkscape to refine their artwork\, adjust layout\, and prepare files for cutting. \nOnce designs are ready\, youth learn how digital files become physical objects using Cricut machines\, the Brother ScanNCut\, and other cutters. Finished stickers may be laminated and taken home or used in future STEAM Futures projects\, connecting digital creativity to tangible results. \n\nWhat You’ll Learn & Do\nParticipants will: \n\nCreate and refine digital artwork using illustration and design tools\nPrepare designs for cutting and print-and-cut workflows\nOperate digital cutting machines such as Cricut and ScanNCut\nLaminate and finish stickers and decals\n\nWhy this matters:\nDigital design and cutting introduce youth to workflows used in product design\, branding\, manufacturing\, and creative technology fields. Understanding how digital files translate into physical outputs supports later STEAM Futures workshops involving laser cutting\, 3D printing\, and media production. \n\nSTEAM Futures Media Moment\nYouth will take part in the Mini Media Crew during the Screen to Sticker moment by capturing screen recordings and short clips of cutting machines in action. With permission\, this footage may be included in the final STEAM Futures Community Showcase. \n\nWho Can Attend\n\nPrimary audience: Youth ages 8–18\nYouth ages 8–12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who remains on-site for the duration of the workshop.\nAdults may participate as full creators if space is available. SUMMARY:Intro to 3D Model Printing - STEAM Futures Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:About This Workshop\nIn this workshop\, youth explore the fundamentals of 3D model printing by learning how digital models are prepared\, adjusted\, and turned into physical objects. Participants use beginner-friendly tools such as TinkerCAD or Shapr3D to create or modify simple charms\, tokens\, or small props\, focusing on scale\, shape\, and printability rather than complex modeling. \nYouth are introduced to slicing and 3D printing workflows using Creality K1 Max and Ender 3 printers. While not every print will finish during the session\, all participants will see their designs move from digital files to physical prints\, reinforcing how digital decisions affect real-world outcomes. \n\nWhat You’ll Learn & Do\nParticipants will: \n\nCreate\, adjust\, or remix simple 3D models using beginner-friendly tools\nLearn how scale\, shape\, and alignment affect print success\nExplore slicing basics and how 3D printers read digital files\nObserve 3D printers in operation and understand the full print workflow\n\nWhy this matters:3D model printing helps youth understand how digital designs become physical objects\, a core concept in engineering\, manufacturing\, and product design. These skills support later STEAM Futures workshops involving laser cutting\, motion builds\, electronics integration\, and media documentation of fabrication processes. \n\nSTEAM Futures Media Moment\nYouth will take part in the Mini Media Crew during the 3D Reveal moment by recording short clips of their models on screen and their prints in progress.
