When the focus is on nature\, they invite us to consider how ecosystems work\, how resources are balanced\, and how human choices affect the environment. At the same time\, they spark conversation\, teamwork\, and friendly competition. Playing these games is a lighthearted way to think about serious topics\, and often you learn something new without even realizing it. \nWhat you will do\nOver the course of this event\, participants will rotate through different board games with environmental themes. Some tables will host fast\, easy-to-learn games perfect for beginners\, while others will dive into longer strategy games for those who want a deeper challenge. Volunteers and facilitators will be on hand to explain rules\, help set up\, and keep the energy flowing. You are welcome to join for it all or just pop in for a little while. \nExpect opportunities to try popular games like Wingspan\, Photosynthesis\, alongside smaller titles that highlight topics like pollinators\, climate\, or wildlife habitats. The goal is not to win every round but to enjoy the mix of play\, conversation\, and discovery that comes from trying something new. \nWhat to bring\n\nComfortable clothing for a relaxed indoor evening.\nA willingness to learn new games and meet new people.\n\nThe setting\nBase Camp will be arranged into multiple gaming areas\, each with a selection of eco-themed board games. Whether you want to learn something new\, dive into a longer campaign\, or spend an hour rolling dice with friends\, Frog Con is designed to be flexible\, social\, and approachable. \nWhat to Expect at Frog Con 2025\nThroughout the day\, multiple rooms at the Idea Forge Creators Space will be alive with activity. This program blends art and ecology\, giving participants the chance to decorate a birdhouse while also learning more about the birds that call the local area home. It is a relaxed\, family-friendly event where imagination takes flight and every brushstroke adds to our shared appreciation of the natural world. \nWhy birdhouses\nBirdhouses are more than decorative pieces. They remind us of the birds that live alongside us and the habitats they need to thrive. By painting and personalizing these miniature houses\, we bring awareness to the beauty and diversity of local bird species while also creating something joyful to display at home\, in a garden\, or as a gift especially since this lands right near some holidays. Each birdhouse tells its own story\, reflecting the personality of its creator while sparking conversations about the role birds play in healthy ecosystems. \nWhat you will do\nIn this two-hour session\, Jay will guide participants through the painting process. You will start by choosing a birdhouse and selecting colors and designs. As you paint\, you will also learn about some of Connecticut’s native birds\, what they look like\, what they eat\, and how they interact with their environments. The workshop will encourage creative freedom\, whether you choose realistic designs based on native species or imaginative\, playful patterns that bring your birdhouse to life. \nWhat to bring\n\nComfortable clothes that you do not mind getting paint on.\nYour creativity and any design ideas you want to try.\nOptional: photos or references of your favorite local birds.\n\nAll painting supplies and birdhouses will be provided\, so you can focus on enjoying the process. \nThe setting\nThe Idea Forge Creators Space provides a welcoming creative space where participants can paint\, share ideas\, and learn together. Since its founding\, Project Imo has engaged over 1\,600 youth across 176 immersive educational programs\, contributing more than 9\,000 cumulative learning hours in areas ranging from career development and environmental conservation to hands-on maker education through the Idea Forge Creator Space. The Base Camp Teen Center has welcomed hundreds of youth from over 15 towns\, offering a safe\, creative\, and empowering space for growth. Through sustained partnerships\, generous funders\, and community collaboration\, Project Imo has achieved an impact valued at over $765\,000 in grants\, fundraising\, and volunteer support—ensuring that all programs remain free or low-cost for families. They represent growth\, resilience\, and connection. By choosing a Gratitude Tree\, we give ourselves a visible and welcoming space where anyone can stop\, pause\, and remember the things that matter most. Whether it is a note tied to a branch\, a quiet moment shared with a friend\, or simply standing in its shade\, the tree becomes a living reminder that gratitude is always within reach. \nWhat you will do\nThis two-hour session will begin with a conversation about what gratitude means to us as individuals and as a community. Together\, we will talk about how noticing and naming our gratitude can change how we see everyday life. Then\, guided by our youth leader\, we will scout for a tree in a central\, accessible location to serve as our first Gratitude Tree. Hosted at the Idea Forge at Base Camp\, this event is designed for all skill levels and is as much about self-expression and fun as it is about technique. Whether you are an experienced painter or someone who has not picked up a brush in years\, you will find a welcoming space to explore your creativity. \nWhy rock painting\nPainting rocks is simple\, approachable\, and surprisingly meaningful. Each stone has its own shape and character\, and when given a splash of color or a thoughtful design\, it becomes something special. Painted rocks can brighten a garden\, become small gifts to share\, or take part in community traditions like rock hunts\, where people leave painted stones in public spaces for others to discover. By participating\, you are not just making art\, you are creating connections and adding joy to the places around you. \nWhat you will do\nIn this two-hour session\, we will move participants through the basics of rock painting\, from selecting and preparing stones to choosing colors\, patterns\, and themes. You will experiment with different brushes and techniques\, try out simple designs\, and\, if you like\, add words or images that carry a personal message. By the end of the workshop\, you will have painted rocks to take home and the option to contribute to a new community rock hunt project launching as part of our Environmental Impact Program experiences. \nWhat to bring\n\nComfortable clothes that you do not mind getting a little paint on.\nYour creativity and ideas\, a few stencils and some inspiration will be provided.\nOptional: small\, smooth rocks you would like to paint. Tables\, supplies\, and materials will be set up to make it easy for everyone to dive in. The atmosphere will be casual and social\, with space for conversation and laughter while painting. \nWho should join\nThis event is open to anyone who enjoys making things by hand or wants to try something new. After starting downtown with A New Hope and then standing up to mugwort in The Mugwort Strikes Back\, we now head into the Windham Outdoor Education Preserve for the final part of our invasive species cleanup series. Return of the Trail Crew is where everything we’ve learned comes together in a space that shows both the challenges and the possibilities of caring for the land we share. \nWhy the preserve matters\nThe preserve is more than just trails and trees. It is a living classroom\, a gathering place\, and a glimpse of what healthy ecosystems can look like when they are supported and protected. But like the downtown spaces we’ve worked on\, the preserve is also under pressure. Invasive plants threaten to spread along the trails\, choke out native growth\, and weaken the biodiversity that makes this place so special. \nBy taking our cleanup efforts here\, we are stepping into a deeper level of stewardship. This is not just about tidying up. It is about actively restoring balance to an environment where birds\, pollinators\, and native plants depend on us to make space for them to thrive. \nWhat you’ll do\nWe will begin with a walk through the preserve to identify invasive species in a natural setting. You’ll see how they spread along the trails and into the understory\, and you’ll learn how to recognize them in the middle of a forest environment rather than a sidewalk crack or downtown lot. From there\, we’ll spend time on hands-on removal\, focusing on key areas where invasives threaten to push out native plants. \nWorking in the preserve brings its own rewards. Every patch we clear opens the door for healthier growth and improves the experience for future visitors. You’ll leave with a sense of how small\, steady actions make a visible difference in larger natural spaces. \nBuilding on the series\nReturn of the Trail Crew is the final chapter in our three-part series on combating invasive species. Together we have raised awareness\, practiced identification\, and taken action downtown. We’ve faced one of the most stubborn plants in our area with persistence and teamwork. Now\, in this last event\, we bring that knowledge into the preserve\, where the work connects directly to the future of our trails and outdoor education efforts. \nYou don’t need to have attended the first two events to join this one\, but if you did\, this is your chance to put everything you’ve learned into action. And even if this is your first time\, you’ll be part of something that is bigger than one cleanup. DESCRIPTION:Turning Leaves Turning Wheels: A Fall Foliage Cycling Ride\nCelebrate the beauty of autumn with a group cycling ride along the Airline State Park Trail. Starting at Base Camp\, we will ride east toward North Windham\, taking in the changing colors of the season and making time to enjoy the wetlands and forest edges along the way. This event combines the joy of cycling with the simple pleasure of noticing fall unfold around us. \nWhat makes this ride special?\nFall is one of the most rewarding times to be outside in New England. The air is crisp\, the light is golden\, and the landscape is painted in reds\, oranges\, and yellows. On a bike\, you can take in more of this beauty at a comfortable pace while still being close enough to notice the small details. Turning Leaves\, Turning Wheels is designed to be both active and reflective\, giving participants the chance to move their bodies and refresh their spirits in the middle of the season. \nThe route\nWe will depart from Base Camp and follow the Airline State Park Trail east. The path is mostly flat and well maintained\, making it approachable for a wide range of riders. Our destination is North Windham\, with a possible planned stop at the bog near the Natchaug River and if time is available spend a little time to explore the Outdoor Education Preserve. DESCRIPTION:Community Invasive Species Cleanup: The Mugwort Strikes Back\nIf you joined us for A New Hope\, you know how quickly invasive species can change the look and feel of our community. We pulled back the curtain on what they are\, why they matter\, and what it feels like to take action together. But invasive plants don’t go quietly. They spread quickly\, return stubbornly\, and often take a lot more than one round of effort to control. \nThat’s why our second cleanup event is called The Mugwort Strikes Back. Mugwort is one of the most persistent invasive species in our area. It pops up along roadsides\, sidewalks\, and vacant lots\, growing in thick clusters that crowd out just about everything else. It is hardy\, it is fast\, and it is everywhere once you start looking. But as strong as mugwort seems\, it doesn’t stand a chance against a determined community. \nWhats up with Mugwort?\nAt first glance\, mugwort might not look like much. Some even mistake it for a common wildflower. But left unchecked\, it spreads underground through strong roots and quickly takes over whole patches of land. Its growth leaves little room for the wildflowers\, grasses\, and shrubs that support pollinators\, birds\, and other wildlife. Over time\, mugwort creates a monoculture which is a space where diversity is lost\, and the ecosystem becomes weaker. \nBy learning to recognize and remove mugwort\, we protect the variety of life that makes our environment resilient. Each plant pulled is a chance for something else to grow. Each cleared space is a small but important victory. \nWhat you’ll do\nThis cleanup\, like the first\, blends learning with action. We’ll start by revisiting some of the skills from our previous cleanup and adding in new details specific to mugwort. You’ll learn how to tell it apart from look-alike plants\, understand how it spreads\, and practice methods for removal that make a lasting impact. Then we’ll roll up our sleeves again and get to work in some of the local areas in town. \nTogether we’ll tackle key spots where mugwort has taken hold. You’ll see firsthand how persistent it can be\, but also how effective we are when we put in the effort as a group. Whether you are joining us again after the first event or this is your introduction to the series\, you’ll leave with knowledge you can use anywhere mugwort grows. \nA series in motion\nThis event is the middle chapter in our three-part series. In September\, we set the stage with A New Hope\, learning to spot invasives and making a difference downtown. Project Imo and Idea Forge staff will guide you through crafting your very own magic wand—starting with a sturdy wooden stock\, glue\, and paint\, then moving on to decorating and personalizing it with your own magical flair. \nThis all-ages workshop is designed for creativity at your pace: spend 20 minutes\, forty\, or the whole three hours making your wand uniquely yours. Whether you’re a young witch or wizard\, a parent\, or just a curious creator\, you’ll leave with a wand that feels like it was made for you. \n\n\nAll Ages Welcome \n\n\nYouth under 13 must be accompanied by an adult \n\n\nFree Event – Donations Gladly Accepted (your support helps keep this and other community programs free!) \n\n\nAll participants are encouraged to make a second wand to leave behind for our dedicated youth and volunteers to give out to children on Halloween! \nThis workshop is part of our Spooktastic Halloween 2025 Series. Whether you are brand new to birdwatching or already familiar with your binoculars\, this outing will give you a chance to learn\, share\, and enjoy the beauty of the preserve together. \nWhy birding at this specific environment?\nThe preserve is designed to be a space where people and nature thrive side by side. It offers meadows\, wetlands\, forest edges\, and quiet wooded trails\, all of which create habitats for an incredible variety of birds. By spending time here\, we not only enjoy the sights and sounds of these winged neighbors\, we also deepen our understanding of why protecting such spaces is essential. Each bird we notice tells a story about the health of the ecosystem and the balance of the environment we all share. \nWhat we will do together\nWe will begin with a short introduction to the preserve and the role it plays in local conservation and education. Then we will set out in that environment with our eyes and ears open. We will guide the group in noticing bird activity at different habitats\, listening for songs\, watching for movement in the trees\, and scanning open fields for hawks\, swallows\, and other local species. Along the way\, you will learn simple techniques for spotting birds and using behavior and habitat as clues for identification. \nThis program is not about racing through a checklist. Instead\, it is about slowing down and noticing. Each stop along the way is a chance to pause\, look more closely\, and talk together about what we see. You will be encouraged to ask questions\, share what you notice\, and enjoy the process of learning with others. \nWhat to bring\n\nComfortable walking shoes for uneven terrain.\nWeather-appropriate clothing and layers for a morning outdoors.\nWater and a small snack.\nBinoculars\, if you have them. A few extras may be available to borrow.\nA sense of curiosity and patience\, the two best tools for birding.\n\nWhat you might see\nThe preserve supports a variety of bird life depending on the season. DESCRIPTION:Adventure Cycling the Airline\nTake a midweek break and enjoy an afternoon ride along the Airline State Park Trail. Starting from Base Camp\, we will head west on a scenic stretch of the trail that combines history\, nature\, and plenty of open space for relaxed cycling. This adventure is designed for riders who want to stretch their legs\, connect with others\, and discover the beauty of our local trail system at an easygoing pace. \nWhat this ride is about\nUnlike a long-distance ride or a competitive event\, this outing is meant to be casual and fun. It is a chance to enjoy the trail\, breathe fresh air\, and see what makes the Airline such a unique part of our community. Whether you ride often or only occasionally\, this ride is about being outdoors\, not racing. We will go at a steady\, comfortable speed that allows for conversation and observation along the way. \nThe route\nThe Airline State Park Trail west of Base Camp offers a mix of wooded corridors\, quiet stretches\, and wide-open views. The trail surface is mostly level and packed\, making it suitable for a variety of bikes. We will ride for about two hours before looping back\, giving us enough time to enjoy the surroundings without feeling rushed. Expect a balance of steady pedaling and short stops to gather and talk about what we are seeing. \nTrail highlights\nAlong this section of the Airline\, you may notice the remnants of its history as a rail line\, from long\, straight stretches to gentle grades that once carried trains through the region. Today\, the trail has become a greenway that links towns and preserves. It is common to see songbirds darting through the trees\, chipmunks crossing the path\, and occasional glimpses of hawks overhead.
