Surrounded by the quiet of the trees\, we will step away from the noise of everyday life and explore simple practices that invite calm\, clarity\, and presence. \nWhy mindfulness in nature matters\nIn our busy world\, it is easy to move from one task to the next without ever pausing to notice the beauty that is around us. Spending time in nature with intention changes that. Research shows that time outdoors can lower stress\, restore focus\, and boost our sense of well-being. When paired with mindfulness\, paying attention to the present moment without judgment\, time in nature becomes even more powerful. It reminds us that we are part of a larger living system and that peace can be found in simple awareness. \nWhat you will do\nDuring this session\, our trusty mindfulness guru Deb will guide participants through a series of light\, accessible activities that draw on mindfulness\, relaxation\, and quiet observation. DESCRIPTION:Community Invasive Species Cleanup: The Mugwort Strikes Back\nIf you joined us for A New Hope\, you know how quickly invasive species can change the look and feel of our community. We pulled back the curtain on what they are\, why they matter\, and what it feels like to take action together. But invasive plants don’t go quietly. They spread quickly\, return stubbornly\, and often take a lot more than one round of effort to control. \nThat’s why our second cleanup event is called The Mugwort Strikes Back. Mugwort is one of the most persistent invasive species in our area. It pops up along roadsides\, sidewalks\, and vacant lots\, growing in thick clusters that crowd out just about everything else. It is hardy\, it is fast\, and it is everywhere once you start looking. But as strong as mugwort seems\, it doesn’t stand a chance against a determined community. \nWhats up with Mugwort?\nAt first glance\, mugwort might not look like much. Some even mistake it for a common wildflower. But left unchecked\, it spreads underground through strong roots and quickly takes over whole patches of land. Its growth leaves little room for the wildflowers\, grasses\, and shrubs that support pollinators\, birds\, and other wildlife. Over time\, mugwort creates a monoculture which is a space where diversity is lost\, and the ecosystem becomes weaker. \nBy learning to recognize and remove mugwort\, we protect the variety of life that makes our environment resilient. Each plant pulled is a chance for something else to grow. Each cleared space is a small but important victory. \nWhat you’ll do\nThis cleanup\, like the first\, blends learning with action. We’ll start by revisiting some of the skills from our previous cleanup and adding in new details specific to mugwort. You’ll learn how to tell it apart from look-alike plants\, understand how it spreads\, and practice methods for removal that make a lasting impact. Then we’ll roll up our sleeves again and get to work in some of the local areas in town. \nTogether we’ll tackle key spots where mugwort has taken hold. You’ll see firsthand how persistent it can be\, but also how effective we are when we put in the effort as a group. Whether you are joining us again after the first event or this is your introduction to the series\, you’ll leave with knowledge you can use anywhere mugwort grows. \nA series in motion\nThis event is the middle chapter in our three-part series. In September\, we set the stage with A New Hope\, learning to spot invasives and making a difference downtown. Now\, in The Mugwort Strikes Back\, we’re doubling down\, focusing on one of the most aggressive plants we face locally. And looking ahead\, the series will wrap up in November with Return of the Trail Crew\, where we’ll take our skills into the preserve for hands-on stewardship of our shared natural spaces. \nYou don’t need to attend all three events to benefit\, but each one builds on the last. Whether you are brand new to birdwatching or already familiar with your binoculars\, this outing will give you a chance to learn\, share\, and enjoy the beauty of the preserve together. \nWhy birding at this specific environment?\nThe preserve is designed to be a space where people and nature thrive side by side. It offers meadows\, wetlands\, forest edges\, and quiet wooded trails\, all of which create habitats for an incredible variety of birds. By spending time here\, we not only enjoy the sights and sounds of these winged neighbors\, we also deepen our understanding of why protecting such spaces is essential. Each bird we notice tells a story about the health of the ecosystem and the balance of the environment we all share. \nWhat we will do together\nWe will begin with a short introduction to the preserve and the role it plays in local conservation and education. Then we will set out in that environment with our eyes and ears open. We will guide the group in noticing bird activity at different habitats\, listening for songs\, watching for movement in the trees\, and scanning open fields for hawks\, swallows\, and other local species. Along the way\, you will learn simple techniques for spotting birds and using behavior and habitat as clues for identification. \nThis program is not about racing through a checklist. It might not look like much at first glance\, but if left unchecked\, invasives can reshape entire ecosystems. \nThis first event in our invasive species cleanup series\, A New Hope\, is about recognizing the problem and showing how much of a difference we can make when we work together. We’ll meet downtown\, right in the center of our shared spaces\, and take a closer look at the plants that have taken hold in the heart of town. Along the way\, we’ll learn how to identify some of the most common invasive plants in Connecticut and talk about why knowing about these species matter. More importantly\, we’ll get our hands dirty and practice removing them in ways that make space for healthier growth. \nWhy this matters\nInvasive species aren’t just weeds. They compete with native plants for sunlight\, soil\, and water. They can crowd out flowers and grasses that support pollinators\, reduce food sources for birds and wildlife\, and make it harder for native trees and shrubs to grow. When invasives take hold\, they don’t just change how an area looks\, they change how it works. That means fewer butterflies\, fewer bees\, fewer birds\, and fewer opportunities for people to connect with a thriving natural space. \nWhen we come together to learn and act\, we push back against that trend. Removing invasives may not seem like a big step\, but it creates real openings for healthier plants to return. Over time\, those changes ripple out\, creating stronger ecosystems that benefit both wildlife and people. \nWhat you’ll do\nThis session combines education and action. We’ll begin with a short walk and talk to introduce some of the most common invasive plants in our community. You’ll learn how to recognize their leaves\, flowers\, and growth patterns\, so you’ll be able to spot them not only downtown but also in your own backyard. From there\, we’ll move into hands-on abatement work. Together\, we’ll target key areas of downtown\, removing invasive growth and making the space more welcoming for both people and native plants. \nNo experience is needed\, and all are welcome. What you bring is your energy\, your curiosity\, and your willingness to work side by side with neighbors. \nBuilding momentum\nA New Hope is the beginning of a three-part series. Then in November we’ll close out the series at the Windham Outdoor Education Preserve with Return of the Trail Crew\, focusing on rewilding and long-term stewardship. Such a Character is a playful\, beginner-friendly introduction to character design where absolutely no drawing experience is required. We’ll show you how to create expressive\, fun characters using simple shapes\, imagination\, and a few creative tricks. If you can doodle a smiley face\, you can design a whole cast of characters! \nDesigned for all ages and skill levels\, this workshop is a great way to explore your creative side without pressure or perfection. You’ll leave with a character that’s uniquely yours—and the confidence to keep creating. Whether you’re a curious kid\, a supportive parent\, or an adult rediscovering your inner artist\, come discover just how fun and freeing it is to draw. EVERYONE can draw. Let’s prove it together. \nThis workshop will use basic pencil\, pen\, and marker skills on paper (totally Old School… we know).
