SUMMARY:Motion Makers and Media Magic - STEAM Futures Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:About This Workshop\nIn this capstone workshop\, youth create small moving projects using either simple mechanical linkages or low-voltage DC motors and battery packs. Builds may wobble\, spin\, wave\, or animate characters and props created in earlier STEAM Futures workshops\, allowing participants to revisit and extend past work in new ways. \nThe second half of the session focuses on Media Magic. Youth learn how to document their projects by recording short demo clips using cameras and audio equipment. Participants experiment with voiceovers\, sound effects\, and simple edits to produce 10–20 second videos that highlight motion\, creativity\, and process. These clips will be featured in the STEAM Futures Community Showcase. \n\nWhat You’ll Learn & Do\nParticipants will: \n\nBuild or adapt moving creations using basic mechanics or hobby motors\nExperiment with motion\, balance\, and repetition in physical builds\nPlan a short demo clip to showcase how their project works\nRecord simple voiceovers and sound effects\nAssemble short videos using pre-built editing templates\n\nWhy this matters:\nMotion and media bring ideas to life. Combining physical movement with documentation helps youth understand how engineering\, storytelling\, and communication work together. These skills reinforce systems thinking\, iteration\, and presentation—key concepts across STEAM fields and creative industries. \n\nSTEAM Futures Media Moment\nYouth will take part in the Mini Media Crew by planning\, recording\, and editing short demo videos of their moving creations. With permission\, these clips may be included in the final STEAM Futures Community Showcase as part of a highlight reel. \n\nWho Can Attend\n\nPrimary audience: Youth ages 8–18\nYouth ages 8–12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who remains on-site for the duration of the workshop.\nAdults may participate as full creators if space is available. Youth participants are always prioritized.\n\n\nCost\nYouth participants attend free of charge thanks to support from the Liberty Bank Foundation and Eversource.\nAdults are welcome to attend at no cost and are invited to contribute\, if they are able\, to help make future programs accessible to the whole community. \n\nLocation\nProject Imo – Idea Forge Creators Space \n\nAbout the STEAM Futures Workshop Series\nSTEAM Futures is a hands-on workshop series hosted at Project Imo’s Idea Forge Creators Space. Each session blends art\, design\, science\, technology\, and engineering through accessible\, project-based learning. SUMMARY:Digital Illustration Fundamentals- Character Design and Digital Workflow Workshop
DESCRIPTION:LEARN Digital Illustration Fundamentals- Character Design and Digital Workflow Workshop\n\nDigital Art Fundamentals\nDate: Thursday\, February 26Time: 5:00 – 7:30 PMLocation: Cupid’s Corner Pop Up Shop\, 786 Main Street\, WillimanticHost: Project Imo / Idea Forge StudiosAges: 16+Cost: Free (Ticket Required)Capacity: Extremely Limited Seating \nJoin us for this exciting part of our Romantic Willimantic and Chocolate Fest celebrations in February. \nThis hands-on workshop introduces participants to digital illustration and character design using professional-grade tools and workflows. Designed for beginner digital artists with some illustration background or intermediate users of digital design software\, this session walks step-by-step through how illustrators see\, simplify\, and construct characters from reference to finished color. \nParticipants will work in Procreate on iPads\, using Apple Pencil or compatible stylus tools. Project Imo will provide four iPad Pro devices for participants who do not have their own. RSVP is required and will ask whether you are bringing your own device or need to reserve one of the studio units. \n\nWhat You Can Expect\n\n\nA guided\, start-to-finish character illustration workflow \n\n\nUnderstanding illustration as an act of seeing\, not just drawing \n\n\nBreaking references down into basic shapes and forms \n\n\nBuilding dynamic poses using skeletons over shapes \n\n\nLayer-based workflows in Procreate: \n\n\nSketch layers \n\n\nInk layers \n\n\nColor and adjustment layers \n\n\n\n\nUsing layers intentionally for flexibility and revision \n\n\nIntro to designing with print in mind\, even when working digitally \n\n\nReal-world tips drawn from professional illustration and production experience \n\n\nThis workshop is intentionally paced and structured\, but participants without any illustration background should expect a learning curve. The goal is clarity\, not perfection. \n\nDeeper Dive: How the Process Works\nRather than starting with “how to draw a character\,” this workshop focuses on how illustrators think. Participants will learn how experienced artists translate what they see into simplified\, buildable visual information. \nWe’ll start with references and discuss how to: \n\n\nIdentify core shapes that define form and weight \n\n\nEstablish balance and movement before detail \n\n\nCreate readable poses using simple skeletal structures \n\n\nRefine sketches into clean line work \n\n\nApply color with intention using digital tools \n\n\nAlong the way\, we’ll talk about how digital illustration overlaps with print\, product design\, publishing\, and storytelling\, connecting art skills to real creative and professional pathways. \n/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/20260126_185703000_iOS.mp4\n\nInstructor Bio\nThis workshop is led by Jay Hyland\, Executive Director of Project Imo and a seasoned illustrator and designer. Jay is the creator of original story worlds including Stars of Sibrasus and Sky Isles of Seorsus\, blending character design\, worldbuilding\, and narrative illustration. Jay started Idea Forge Games to launch fundraising game design for continued community programming support. \nEarlier in his career\, Jay developed character design for commercial and branded projects. Today\, his work focuses on education\, youth creative pathways\, and helping emerging artists build strong fundamentals that translate across mediums. \nJay also leads creative programming through Project Imo’s Idea Forge Studios\, where illustration\, media\, fabrication\, and storytelling intersect. \n \n\nCall to Action\nRSVP is required and space is extremely limited.Reserve your seat early and indicate whether you will bring your own iPad or need to use one of the provided devices. \nThis workshop is ideal for: \n\n\nEmerging illustrators \n\n\nDigital artists transitioning from traditional media \n\n\nDesigners looking to strengthen character fundamentals \n\n\nCreatives curious about Procreate workflows \n\n\n\nAbout Project Imo & Idea Forge Studios\nProject Imo is a Connecticut-based educational nonprofit advancing hands-on learning\, creative skill-building\, and youth career development. Through its public Idea Forge Studios\, Project Imo provides access to professional tools\, mentorship\, and community-centered creative education for teens and adults alike. \nWorkshops like this reflect Project Imo’s mission to make high-quality creative learning accessible\, demystify professional workflows\, and connect artistic practice to real-world opportunity. \nBe a hero. SUMMARY:Light Up Characters Circuits and Creativity - STEAM Futures Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:About This Workshop\nIn this workshop\, participants learn the basics of circuits by creating light-up characters\, badges\, or small props. Using LEDs\, coin cell batteries\, and copper tape\, youth build simple paper- or card-based circuits that bring designs to life—lighting up eyes\, symbols\, or “magic tiles” that glow when a character stands on them. \nThe session focuses on accessible electronics concepts such as loops\, polarity\, and troubleshooting. Youth are encouraged to experiment\, test ideas\, and problem-solve when circuits don’t work on the first try. The techniques introduced here can be expanded in later STEAM Futures workshops involving motion\, 3D printing\, and interactive builds. \n\nWhat You’ll Learn & Do\nParticipants will: \n\nBuild simple circuits using batteries\, LEDs\, and conductive paths\nUse copper tape to create paper-based and card-based circuits\nExplore polarity\, loops\, and basic troubleshooting\nIntegrate light and electronics into visual character design\n\nWhy this matters:Learning basic circuitry helps youth understand how energy flows through systems and how design choices affect function. These concepts support future STEAM Futures workshops that involve interactive objects\, motion\, digital fabrication\, and media-driven storytelling. \n\nSTEAM Futures Media Moment\nYouth will take part in the Mini Media Crew by capturing short video clips of their illuminated creations in a Glow Booth setup. With permission\, these clips may be included in the final STEAM Futures Community Showcase. \n\nWho Can Attend\n\nPrimary audience: Youth ages 8–18\nYouth ages 8–12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who remains on-site for the duration of the workshop.\nAdults may participate as full creators if space is available. SUMMARY:Eco-Gaming: Board games with a nature twist
DESCRIPTION:Eco-Gaming: Board Games with a Nature Twist\nGather around the table for an evening of fun\, strategy\, and discovery. Eco-Gaming is all about board games that highlight the natural world\, giving players a chance to explore themes of ecology\, conservation\, and wildlife through play. From well-loved titles to hidden gems\, each game has been chosen because it makes you think differently about nature while still delivering the joy and laughter of a good game night. \nWhy eco-themed games\nGames have a unique power to teach and connect. When the focus is on nature\, they invite us to consider how ecosystems work\, how resources are balanced\, and how human choices affect the environment. At the same time\, they spark conversation\, teamwork\, and friendly competition. Playing these games is a lighthearted way to think about serious topics\, and often you learn something new without even realizing it. \nWhat you will do\nOver the course of this event\, participants will rotate through different board games with environmental themes. Some tables will host fast\, easy-to-learn games perfect for beginners\, while others will dive into longer strategy games for those who want a deeper challenge. Volunteers and facilitators will be on hand to explain rules\, help set up\, and keep the energy flowing. You are welcome to join for it all or just pop in for a little while. \nExpect opportunities to try popular games like Wingspan\, Photosynthesis\, alongside smaller titles that highlight topics like pollinators\, climate\, or wildlife habitats. The goal is not to win every round but to enjoy the mix of play\, conversation\, and discovery that comes from trying something new. \nWhat to bring\n\nComfortable clothing for a relaxed indoor evening.\nA willingness to learn new games and meet new people.\n\nThe setting\nBase Camp will be arranged into multiple gaming areas\, each with a selection of eco-themed board games. Tables will vary in size so groups can form naturally around different games. The atmosphere will be casual and social\, with space for conversation\, laughter\, and learning as play unfolds. Breaks will be encouraged\, and participants are welcome to float between tables as games finish and restart. \nWho should join\nThis program is open to anyone who enjoys games or wants to try something new. No prior experience with board gaming is required—facilitators will be ready to teach and guide. Adults\, teens\, and families are all welcome. Whether you are a strategy enthusiast or someone who just enjoys the social side of gaming\, you will find something to enjoy here. \nWhat you will take away\n\nExposure to a variety of eco-themed board games you may not have played before.\nA better understanding of how play can be used to explore real-world ecological ideas.\nNew connections with fellow participants who share an interest in nature and community.\nA fun and memorable evening filled with laughter and creativity.\n\nEco-Gaming is a reminder that learning and play can go hand in hand. By choosing games with a nature twist\, we celebrate both the joy of gaming and the importance of the environment. Join us for a long afternoon where competition is friendly\, curiosity is encouraged\, and every game brings us closer to appreciating the world we share.

SUMMARY:Little House for Birdies: Miniature Birdhouse Painting
DESCRIPTION:Little House for Birdies: Miniature Birdhouse Painting\nCelebrate creativity\, nature\, and community in this hands-on workshop where we will paint miniature birdhouses inspired by Connecticut’s native bird species. This program blends art and ecology\, giving participants the chance to decorate a birdhouse while also learning more about the birds that call the local area home. It is a relaxed\, family-friendly event where imagination takes flight and every brushstroke adds to our shared appreciation of the natural world. \nWhy birdhouses\nBirdhouses are more than decorative pieces. They remind us of the birds that live alongside us and the habitats they need to thrive. By painting and personalizing these miniature houses\, we bring awareness to the beauty and diversity of local bird species while also creating something joyful to display at home\, in a garden\, or as a gift especially since this lands right near some holidays. Each birdhouse tells its own story\, reflecting the personality of its creator while sparking conversations about the role birds play in healthy ecosystems. \nWhat you will do\nIn this two-hour session\, Jay will guide participants through the painting process. You will start by choosing a birdhouse and selecting colors and designs. As you paint\, you will also learn about some of Connecticut’s native birds\, what they look like\, what they eat\, and how they interact with their environments. The workshop will encourage creative freedom\, whether you choose realistic designs based on native species or imaginative\, playful patterns that bring your birdhouse to life. \nWhat to bring\n\nComfortable clothes that you do not mind getting paint on.\nYour creativity and any design ideas you want to try.\nOptional: photos or references of your favorite local birds.\n\nAll painting supplies and birdhouses will be provided\, so you can focus on enjoying the process. \nThe setting\nThe Idea Forge Creators Space provides a welcoming creative space where participants can paint\, share ideas\, and learn together. Tables and supplies will be set up to make the process easy and fun. The atmosphere will be relaxed\, with plenty of room for conversation and laughter as everyone brings their birdhouse to life. \nWho should join\nThis program is open to all ages and skill levels. Families\, individuals\, and groups of friends are encouraged to participate. Children are welcome with adult support. You do not need prior experience with painting as this workshop is about creativity\, fun\, and community connection. \nWhat you will take away\n\nA painted miniature birdhouse to keep or share.\nNew knowledge about Connecticut’s native bird species.\nSimple painting techniques that you can use in future projects.\nMemories of a colorful\, creative experience spent with others.\n\nLittle House for Birdies is more than a craft project. It is a celebration of imagination\, community\, and the feathered friends who brighten our skies. Join us for an afternoon of painting\, learning\, and fun as we create birdhouses that reflect both our creativity and our connection to nature.

SUMMARY:Roots of Gratitude: Finding Our Community Gratitude Tree
DESCRIPTION:Roots of Gratitude: Finding Our Community Gratitude Tree\nGratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful practices we can share. It brings people together\, shifts how we see the world\, and creates space for connection even in busy lives. In this event\, led by one of our youth leaders\, we will gather as a community to explore the idea of gratitude and to identify our first local Gratitude Tree to serve as a living symbol where people can come\, reflect\, and share their thanks with others. \nWhy a Gratitude Tree\nMany cultures and communities have long traditions of gathering around trees. They represent growth\, resilience\, and connection. By choosing a Gratitude Tree\, we give ourselves a visible and welcoming space where anyone can stop\, pause\, and remember the things that matter most. Whether it is a note tied to a branch\, a quiet moment shared with a friend\, or simply standing in its shade\, the tree becomes a living reminder that gratitude is always within reach. \nWhat you will do\nThis two-hour session will begin with a conversation about what gratitude means to us as individuals and as a community. Together\, we will talk about how noticing and naming our gratitude can change how we see everyday life. Then\, guided by our youth leader\, we will scout for a tree in a central\, accessible location to serve as our first Gratitude Tree. Once identified\, we will mark it and introduce simple ways for people to interact with it\, such as writing messages\, leaving small tokens\, or simply visiting when they need a quiet space. \nWhy youth leadership matters\nThis project is being led by one of our youth leaders\, highlighting the power of young voices in shaping how our community grows which has always been a foundational cornerstone for Project Imo. By creating and guiding this effort\, our youth leader shows that gratitude is not just an individual act but something that can inspire others when shared. Their leadership reminds us that the next generation carries both the vision and the creativity to strengthen our community in new ways. \nWhat to bring\n\nComfortable walking shoes for exploring nearby spaces.\nWeather-appropriate clothing.\nA notebook\, pen\, or small slips of paper if you would like to create your first gratitude message.\nAn open mind and willingness to share in conversation.\n\nWho should join\nThis program is for anyone who wants to connect more deeply with gratitude and community. Families\, individuals\, and groups are all welcome. You do not need prior experience with mindfulness or reflection. The only requirement is an interest in creating something lasting that others can enjoy. \nWhat you will take away\n\nA shared sense of what gratitude means in your daily life.\nThe experience of helping select and dedicate our community’s first Gratitude Tree.\nNew ways to practice gratitude at home and in shared spaces.\nInspiration from a youth-led project that will continue to grow beyond the event.\n\nRoots of Gratitude is about more than identifying a tree. It is about planting the idea that gratitude has roots\, branches\, and room to grow. Join us as we create a new tradition and give our community a place to gather\, reflect\, and share thanks for years to come.
