SUMMARY:Laser Cutting and Engraving - STEAM Futures Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:About This Workshop\nIn this workshop\, youth design small signs\, tags\, or decorative props and see them cut or engraved using the Creality Falcon2 Pro laser engraver. Participants learn how vector artwork\, material choice\, and layout affect cutting and engraving results\, while also gaining an understanding of laser safety and workflow. \nBecause laser cutting is a shared process\, this session focuses on design\, preparation\, and demonstration\, with select projects run during the workshop and additional pieces completed after the session as needed. This approach allows youth to experience the full laser workflow without long wait times\, while still receiving finished pieces connected to their designs. \n\nWhat You’ll Learn & Do\nParticipants will: \n\nCreate or refine vector-ready designs for laser cutting or engraving\nLearn how material choice affects laser results\nUnderstand basic laser cutting and engraving workflows\nObserve safe laser operation and cutting demonstrations\nPrepare designs for future fabrication and finishing\n\nWhy this matters:Laser cutting introduces youth to precision fabrication and digital manufacturing concepts used in engineering\, product design\, and creative industries. Understanding how digital files control real-world tools supports later STEAM Futures work involving 3D printing\, motion builds\, electronics integration\, and physical assembly. \n\nSTEAM Futures Media Moment\nYouth will take part in the Mini Media Crew during the Laser in Action moment by capturing safe-angle footage of the laser engraver at work and before-and-after shots of their engraved pieces. With permission\, this footage may be included in the final STEAM Futures Community Showcase. \n\nHow Laser Cutting Will Work\nTo ensure a smooth experience for all participants: \n\nA test cut will be demonstrated during the workshop\nA limited number of designs will be cut or engraved live\nAdditional pieces may be cut after the workshop and made available during Open Maker Space Hours or the following session\n\nThis approach allows youth to focus on design\, learning\, and observation while keeping the workshop moving and accessible. \n\nWho Can Attend\n\nPrimary audience: Youth ages 8–18\nYouth ages 8–12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who remains on-site for the duration of the workshop.\nAdults may participate as full creators if space is available. Youth participants are always prioritized.\n\n\nCost\nYouth participants attend free of charge thanks to support from the Liberty Bank Foundation and Eversource.Adults are welcome to attend at no cost and are invited to contribute\, if they are able\, to help make future programs accessible to the whole community. \n\nLocation\nProject Imo – Idea Forge Creators Space \n\nAbout the STEAM Futures Workshop Series\nSTEAM Futures is a hands-on workshop series hosted at Project Imo’s Idea Forge Creators Space. Each session blends art\, design\, science\, technology\, and engineering through accessible\, project-based learning. Youth explore tools and techniques across multiple disciplines while building confidence as creative makers and problem-solvers.
